You might get a chance to vote on Daylight Saving Time this fall

Your fall ballot in California is going to be one for the ages. Not only does it look like you will be casting a vote on whether or not to split California into three states, but you now also might be voting to possibly end Daylight Saving Time.

The state Senate passed a bill on Thursday asking voters to repeal the current system and allow lawmakers to adjust the time with a two-thirds vote, according to ABC 7.

The bill now goes to the Governor’s desk for approval.  If put on the ballot, it would need to be voted in, then a new bill would need to be passed, so, yeah, it still wouldn’t be a done deal.

Supporters of ending Daylight Saving Time say the practice is outdated, including John Oliver who had a hilarious segment on it in 2015:

The bill’s author, Assemblyman Kansen Chu of San Jose, said the practice of changing the time doesn’t make sense anymore because of technology.

“We got so many electronic gadgets and the air conditioning and you name it. Back in the ’40s when they go home, they pretty much retired, but nowadays, the energy consumption in the evenings is actually higher than the day time,” Chu told SF Gate.

Opponents call efforts like this bill an expensive waste of taxpayer money.
