’60 Minutes’ recently covered California’s drought. It was terrifying.
The segment focused mostly on farmers drilling for groundwater due to the drought, something California has no restrictions on, but (surprise!) the aquifers they are depleting may take hundreds of years to refill. Oh yeah, the ground is also sinking now because of it.
Leslie Stahl also checks in with an expert on aquifers worldwide who shows how just how much ground water is being sucked out of the earth, to the point where water could soon be used “as a weapon to further terrorist objectives” – to which, holy sh*t!
