Uber is destroying Palm Springs’ taxis in an online petition battle over PSP

For reasons that no one can really understand, the policy regarding Uber at the Palm Springs International Airport requires people who wish to catch an Uber to walk a couple hundred feet off property to use the service – while taxis can pull right up to the curb at the terminal.  As the Palm Springs City council decided to punt on making a decision on the matter at their last meeting, the two sides have taken to using online petitions to drum up support – in which one side is is completely demolishing the other.

As of this posting, the petition from the pro-taxi side has 157 signatures.  Uber’s petition has 2,986.

The pro-Uber side argues that the service is already available in the rest of town and at airports like LAX and SFO.  The pro-taxi side argues that fingerprint background checks and random drug & alcohol testing should be required of Uber and Lyft drivers.

Each side has a compelling argument – but, based on the online results, it looks like the public has kind of made up its mind.

Maybe the city council will one day too.
