The State of California uses prisoners as firefighters (and pays them $2 a day to do it) – but, when voters passed prop 47 to release thousands of nonviolent prisoners, that meant that those $2 a day firefighters would not be available to the state (which has already spent its entire firefighting budget for the year).
Stephen Colbert is not at all happy about this.
