Raiders Owner Flies to Palm Desert For That Haircut

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis is profiled by Tim Keown in the new ESPN The Magazine – and while the entire story is a great read, there are some particularly interesting details about Davis and his connection to the Coachella Valley.

He’s worth an estimated $500 million, but when he visits his home in Palm Desert, he drives a $12-a-day rental car to save the $50 cab ride to and from the airport.

And while this is not an uncommon move by the filthy rich in The Coachella Valley (Bill Gates is said to cruise around in a mini-van rather than a more expensive vehicle, so as not to attract attention), what is truly fascinating is the note about that haircut of his:

Davis travels to Palm Desert to get it cut, just as he traveled to Chico from Oakland to visit a preferred barber long after he left college at Chico State. “I think he’s had three barbers since college,” [former Raiders wideout Cliff] Branch says. “If he likes something, he stays loyal.”

Yes, Mark Davis loves his haircut so much that he travels 500 miles to Palm Desert for it.  And by it, I mean THIS HAIRCUT!!!:

Seems like he could save a trip if someone would just buy him a damn Flowbee for Christmas.

The story also notes that Davis owns a 1997 Dodge Caravan with a VHS player mounted to the roof inside, carries a white fanny pack, and owns a 2003 Nokia push-button phone.

Be proud of the guy in charge, Raiders fans.  And say hi to him next time you see him at the barber shop (you will recognize him from the fanny pack…and also the terrible haircut).

Have you seen him around town?  Let us know about it in the comments below…
