A man faces three felony counts after police say he attempted to steal a pool pump from the backyard of a home in Palm Springs.

David Gene Anderson, 36 of Thousand Palms, was arrested Tuesday night after police responded to a pool pump theft alarm at 9:32 p.m. at a home on Roberto Miguel. In a release, authorities say that when they arrived, they saw Anderson in the backyard of the home. He fled on foot over a fence, but was arrested a few minutes later when he returned to a car parked in front of the home.

Authorities say that the pool pump had been removed and moved to another area of the yard, the power supply lines to the pump were damaged, and a natural gas line supplying the pool heater had been cut and was leaking natural gas.

The Palm Springs Fire Department responded to the location and secured the gas leak without incident.

Anderson was arrested without incident and was later transported to the Indio Jail. He faces three felonies: attempted arand theft, cutting a utility line, and damaging a utility pipeline.
