Palm Springs Police warn of increase in catalytic converter thefts in the city

The Palm Springs Police Department posted a warning to city residents on Thursday about an increase in thefts of catalytic converters.

A catalytic converter is typically installed underneath most vehicles and is part of the vehicle’s emissions system. When it’s removed, the vehicle will sound like the muffler has been removed. There might also be a dashboard warning about an issue in the vehicle.

To replace a catalytic converter, costs can be up to $1,000. Police advise residents to park in a secured garage if possible and / or utilize surveillance equipment.

Due to the increase of catalytic converter thefts, police ask anyone who may have been a victim or who has more information to contact them at 760-778-8406. Anonymous information can also be provided to Crime Stoppers at 760-341-7867.
