Palm Desert won’t be doing 4th of July fireworks this year

Following the cancellation of the Palm Springs 4th of July fireworks show a couple of days ago, the city of Palm Desert has announced they have also put the kibosh on a big party with explosions on America’s birthday due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As KESQ notes, the city will instead host what it is calling a “patriotic listening party” – and encouraging people to go outside and listen to patriotic songs on a couple of local radio stations, because I suppose city officials haven’t discovered Spotify yet. Why go outside when there’s no fireworks and it’s hot as f**k? That’s really not all that clear. Palm Desert always just does things as weird as possible, man.

The city also announced they are working with some local restaurants to offer “Independence Day picnic baskets,” which you could eat at home, which might be cool if they are full of hot dogs and beer?

Anyway, like everything getting cancelled these days, it’s expected, but still crappy. A 4th of July without fireworks, baseball, and large parties is weird, but it’s our new normal for now. Plus, hey, I am sure that one jerk on your block will blow up a bunch of stuff and scare your animals anyway – because, you know, ‘Merica.
