Officer-involved shooting leaves man injured in Thousand Palms

An officer-involved shooting in Thousand Palms on Sunday morning resulted in a man hospitalized.

The shooting occurred about 8 am on Varner Road, west of Washington Street in a “well known transient camp,” according to the Desert Sun.

A deputy conducted a records check on a 38-year-old man who lived in the area and determined that the man had an arrest warrant. There was an altercation and the deputy opened fire when he saw the man pull out a weapon.

The man was taken to the hospital for treatment with injuries that police say wouldn’t prevent him from being booked into jail in the immediate future.

The deputy was not injured and has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
