A 7-month-old baby is dead after police say she and her father was struck by a car being driven by the child’s 19-year-old mother.

Police were called to West D Street in Ontario about 11:40 pm on Monday, according to ABC 7. They determined the mother, Sarah Gomez, was involved in argument inside the car with her boyfriend. The boyfriend got out of the car with the child in his arms and Gomez struck the pair with the car.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital by a family member with life-threatening injuries and later died. The boyfriend, a 21-year-old who was not named, was transported with abrasions that were not life-threatening.

Police said it was not yet clear if the strike was intentional. The couple had been drinking at a family gathering prior to the incident.

β€œIt appears alcohol was involved,” Sgt. Jeff Higbee of the Ontario Police Department told the Press Enterprise.

Gomez was arrested at the hospital for assault with a deadly weapon.
