La Quinta decides it doesn’t want a luxury pop-up hotel for Coachella fest

The City of La Quinta, which just months ago seemed into the idea of allowing a pop-up hotel to set up on the SilverRock golf course, has said no to the project after residents of the area objected, reports the Desert Sun.

Festival Lodging’s proposal to put up a Cloud 9 luxury hotel was presented to the City Council as a study session item in November. No formal action was taken but council members voiced support for staff to further explore the proposal, reaching out to nearby residents to see if there were any concerns.

“When the proposal was first brought to council, it was stated that proper outreach to the surrounding communities was a priority. Staff met with those communities and unfortunately the impact was too great to consider moving forward,” Marketing Director Marcie Graham said.

Residents were concerned about traffic, noise, and security from the pop-up, which was to be similar to one that Cloud 9 set up last year in the Spotlight 29 parking garage.

The pop-up planned to set up 150 “rooms” with each costing about $2,400 for a weekend stay and I will let anyone coming to the desert for Coachella stay in a tent in my backyard for half that.
