Authorities were called to a Riverside Taco Bell on Saturday night to rescue a horse that had fallen into a 5-foot-deep hole while leaving the fast food joint. Luckily, they didn’t assume the call was an April Fool’s Day prank.

The horse and its owner were leaving the restaurant on Arlington Avenue about 9 pm when the horse fell through a utility vault cover on the sidewalk.
“I don’t think it was designed — or anyone would’ve expected — that a horse would be walking there, in that part of the city,” Battalion Chief Jeff DeLaurie told the Press Enterprise. He said the hole housed water distribution valves and was about 5-feet-deep.

The Riverside Horse & Animal Rescue Team called in a crane to get the horse out and after several tries at hoisting the animal out of the hole.
A vet examined the horse and found lacerations to its legs that are expected to heal on their own.
