Here’s the Palm Springs version of the New Year’s Eve ball drop

New Year’s eve in the Coachella Valley is usually a pretty quiet night compared to the rest of the country. The elders usually watch the ball drop in New York around 9, then go straight to bed.  As for those a bit younger in town,  there is BB’s party because, well, there really is no other option.

But, this year, the Spa Resort Casino is trying to change that with a block party thing complete with a countdown and whatever this is:

Palm Springs Tree Drop

Described by a Spa Resort Casino official as an “homage to the crystal ball drop in New York City” on KMIR, the technicolor palm tree thing will count down the last few moments of 2015 and welcome in 2016.  Then, I can only guess, it will go back to its full-time gig: a badly camouflaged cell phone tower.

The New Year’s Eve event will also feature kid activities, a bar garden, and the perfect way to rock in 1984 2016: a performance by Starship.

The event will also be broadcast on KMIR, which means you can still enjoy it without leaving your couch…or putting on pants.

But hey, it is the first time in a long time that people in The Coachella Valley will actually have the option to go out and do something on NYE other than an overpriced restaurant, party, or nightclub – and that is pretty cool.

Whatever you may be doing on New Year’s Eve, enjoy and be safe.
