Dunkin’ Donuts claims people aren’t buying donuts because of election

The election pitting Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has probably caused you to hide quite a few Facebook friends’ posts. Meanwhile, Dunkin’ Donuts claims the election has hurt sales. Wait. What?

During an earnings call on Thursday, Dunkin’s CEO blamed a bunch of factors on lagging revenues including the election, via Business Insider:

In response, Dunkin’ Brands CEO Nigel Travis cited several, including “changes in gas prices, changes in food stamp regulations, and, of course, the overwhelming dampening effect of the presidential election.”

“I think we’ll all be pleased when that’s passed,” he said.

So are people not buying donuts because they are worried about who will win the election or this just a dumb excuse for lagging sales?  The internet has some theories:
