Cyclist killed after being struck by a car during Tour de Palm Springs

A bicyclist was killed and another injured after being hit by a car during the Tour de Palm Springs, reports KESQ.

The crash happened about 9:45 am on Dillon Road in Indio Hills. The road was part of the route for the 100 mile Escape the City Lights Route that begins in Palm Springs and heads east to Indio then south to Coachella and back to Palm Springs.

The injured cyclist was airlifted to the hospital and the driver also was injured in the collision and hospitalized.

According to the Desert Sun, a preliminary investigation showed the driver might have been traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control.  The vehicle overturned after hitting the cyclists.

Witnesses told the newspaper the car was traveling 100 mph.

Update: The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Mark Kristofferson, of Lake Stevens, Washington.  21-year-old Ronnie R. Huerta Jr., of Desert Hot Springs, identified by police as the driver of the vehicle, has been arrested on manslaughter charges.
