Authorities discovered the charred remains of a woman near where a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man with an axe, authorities say.

The body was found at about 5 pm on Sunday in the area of Lincoln Street and Avenue 66 in Mecca, according to a news release. Cal Fire crews were made the discovery while extinguishing smoldering debris from a fire that broke out earlier in the day.

The woman’s name and cause of death have not been identified.

Sunday about 3:30 am, a CHP officer opened fire on a man with an axe in the area, who police say was not cooperating. The man was taken to the hospital, where he died.
