Arrest made in shooting death of man at Big Bear nightclub

Police have arrested a Big Bear store owner in the shooting death of a 43-year-old man outside a local nightclub early Tuesday.

Frank Popovich, 53, owner of the Black Fox Trading Post – which sells novelties, crafts and magic tricks – was arrested  in the shooting death of artist James Clark, 42, reports ABC 7.

Police say that Popovich shot Clark during a fight outside the AV Nightclub on Pine Knot Avenue in the Big Bear Lake Village. Authorities say that the men knew each other, but the motive is still being investigated.

The shooting happened at about 1 a.m. Police arrived to find Clark shot in the stomach.  He was taken to the hospital where he died.

Friends identified Clark as a local artist.

“James was a great person. He had a fantastic heart and he may have been misunderstood, but he cared about everybody,” Devon Cote, told ABC 7.
