5 things to do in Greater Palm Springs Memorial Day Weekend

Update: Looking for things to do in 2018?  We have that for you here.

The last weekend in May is nearly here and that means three days off for many and a final farewell to any of the few remaining snowbirds in the desert. While I ponder how the hell we are going to keep this weekend summary feature running in August (“Go outside and watch the tumbleweeds while you melt.”), let’s get into what’s happening in the Coachella Valley for Memorial Day Weekend, 2017:

Rock Yard

Fantasy Springs has double the Rock Yard this weekend – with a Santana tribute, Smooth, on Friday and the always popular Prince tribute, Purple Reign, on Saturday.  The shows are always free to attend and are outside (so dress for the heat), with both nights getting started at 7:30 pm.

The Sandlot

Films on the Great Lawn concludes for the year at Sunnylands on Friday with a showing of “The Sandlot”…THE SANDLOT!!!   It’s free to watch and you are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnic items for the outdoor screening. Gates open at 7:30, movie starts at 8pm.

Sunnylands

Ron White

The stand up comedian has two shows in one night at Cabazon’s Morongo Casino Resort and Spa on Friday.  The 8 pm show is sold out, but the 10:30 pm show (which will probably be better anyway) has tickets going for $55 to $269.

BRT Weekend

Cathedral City is known to host some random festivals and this weekend it is at it again as the Beach Road Trip (BRT) Weekend takes place.  Like many of you, I had no idea this was happening and, when I looked it up, I discovered that it is really more complicated than a festival should be with multiple events at different locations and way too many price points ranging from $95 to $3,000.

Memorial Day Flower Drop

Memorial Day Flower Drop Palm Springs
(Palm Springs Air Museum)

The Palm Springs Air Museum will host their annual Memorial Day services to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country as well as their loved ones. Events include a fly-by and flower drop of over 3,000 red and white carnations from B-25 Mitchell bomber, live music, flight exhibitions, food booths, and a beer garden. The event begins at 10 a.m. and the flower drop memorial will take place at 1 p.m.
