18-year-old woman struck and killed near Coachella fest

A Highland woman was struck and killed by a vehicle on Friday night near The Coachella Music and Arts Festival.

Michala Freeland, 18, was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee at about 8:15 p.m. on Friday on Avenue 52 east of Monroe Street, reports the Desert Sun.

She was taken to Eisenhower Medical Center, where she died a little more than an hour later.

The driver of the Jeep was a man from Indio who is cooperating with the investigation. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to have been a factor.
