15 Freeway Shut Down in Cajon Pass as Fire Engulfs Cars on Freeway

The 15 freeway was closed on Friday afternoon after a brush fire quickly escalated, burning several vehicles on the freeway.

The fire was burning in the median of the freeway just north of State Route 138, according to Caltrans.

The fire struck at least 10 cars according to KTLA along with a boat & trailer and a semi truck.  70 to 80 cars were abandoned on the freeway with many drivers simply attempting to flee the fire on foot.

Caltrans has advised commuters to avoid the area because heavy delays are expected.

The Press Enterprise reports that firefighters and paramedics have been dispatched to the fire as a “mass casualty” incident – meaning they should be prepared to deal with “possible multiple civilian burn victims.” As of 5 p.m. Friday, authorities have not reported any injuries or deaths.
