A 12-year-old boy is dead and his 14-year-old cousin wounded as the result of a drive-by shooting Sunday night in San Bernardino..

The boys were walking to Circle K about 10 p.m. when a dark-colored SUV pulled up alongside them and someone inside opened fire, reports the LA Times.

The boys were able to run a short distance to the Circle K parking lot, where the 12-year-old collapsed and died. The 14-year-old sustained non-fatal wounds and was taken to a nearby hospital.  The Press Enterprise reports that he has since been released.

Police say that even though the shooting occurred in an area known for gang violence, there is nothing to indicate the boys had any gang affiliations. They are asking for the public’s help.

“We’re really going to need the community’s help on this,” Lt. Rich Lawhead said. “We have very limited information to work with.”
