Police Identify Suspect in Banning Shooting Spree

A man who police say went on a random shooting spree in Banning Saturday has been identified.

James Paul Diaz Jr., 34, of Hemet was identified as the suspect by Banning police. Authorities say they are still searching for what the motives may have lead to the construction worker, former firefighter and father of three young children to allegedly shoot 4 random people from his car while driving through Banning, killing Banning residents Benjamin Johnson, 34, and Paul Lesh, 66.

Diaz was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of shooting at a vehicle, and one count of attempted murder.
