Guys trying to get from Joshua Tree to Big Bear lose truck, get arrested

Two men were arrested for being drunk in public after they tried to walk to Big Bear after a party in Joshua Tree Saturday night, only to get lost in the desert near Twentynine Palms.

Marco Salinas, 21, of Los Angeles, and William Ruiz, 35, of Santa Monica, were at a party on Elwood Street in Joshua Tree on Saturday night. The duo left in Ruiz’s pick-up truck and thought they were headed to Big Bear, but ended up getting the vehicle stuck in the sand of the desert, according to Z107.7.

They got out of the truck and started walking, eventually calling the Sheriff’s Department for help as they became lost.

The men continued wandering and ended up dangerously close to a live-fire exercise being conducted by Marines. The Marines stopped the exercise and a Sheriff’s helicopter was flown in to rescue the pair.

Police said that Ruiz smelled of marijuana, and Salinas has an entire bottle of hard alcohol at the party. They were both arrested for being drunk in public, and on misdemeanor warrants from other counties.

The two men could not remember where they parked the truck and police were not able to locate it.
