Alleged drunk driver’s car swallowed by sinkhole after shearing a hydrant in Palm Desert

Crews were called to repair a sinkhole in Palm Desert after police say a man sheared a fire hydrant and caused mass flooding on Saturday night.

Palm Desert police arrived to California Avenue a little before midnight, according to a news release. They arrived to find a blue Saturn had collided with a fire hydrant causing mass water flooding.

The force and amount of water caused a sink hole to occur and the vehicle was swallowed into it. The driver was able to exit the vehicle before it started to sink.

The driver, Ross Berman, 37, of Palm Desert, suffered minor injuries and was was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
